Partial dentures can be a game-changer for anyone needing to replace some but not all of their teeth, restoring confidence, functionality, and a bright smile. In particular, flexible partials help bridge the gap between implants that are out of reach for many patients, and the more economical (but less pleasing) options on the removables side of the spectrum. Since 1947, Valplast has played a key role in elevating partial dentures as a restorative option. However, keeping partial dentures clean is just as critical as maintaining natural teeth.
I recently had a discussion with a dental office who was planning to order a new Valplast partial for one of their patients, simply because the patient had not been particularly compliant when it came to caring for their new dentures. They were prepared to incur the cost of taking new impressions and lab fees, all of which could have been avoided with proper patient education and compliance. In particular, Valplast requires specialized care and maintenance that differs from traditional metal and acrylic based partials. This article dives into why denture hygiene matters and provides a step-by-step guide on how to keep your Valplast appliance spotless.

First, the basics:
1. Preventing Bacteria Build-Up
Partial dentures are in constant contact with your teeth and gums, making them a prime spot for bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Without regular cleaning, these can lead to gum irritation, bad breath, caries and infections.
2. Avoiding Stains and Odors
Dentures can absorb pigments from food, drinks, and tobacco, causing discoloration and unpleasant odors. Cleaning them regularly helps maintain their appearance and freshness.
3. Extending Denture Longevity
Proper care ensures your dentures stay in good condition, reducing the risk of damage or the need for costly replacements.
4. Promoting Overall Health
Oral hygiene is linked to overall health. A clean denture minimizes the risk of systemic infections caused by oral bacteria entering the bloodstream.
1. Remove and Rinse After Eating
Remove your Valplast dentures and rinse them under lukewarm water after every meal, if possible. This helps wash away food debris and prevent plaque accumulation.
2. Use An Approved Denture Cleaner
Valplast is made from nylon, which is a very different polymer from the acrylic (PMMA) resins that most over the counter (OTC) denture cleaners are formatted for. When cleaning Valplast dentures we recommend using only Val-Clean (Valplast Supply Services, Inc.) or Smile Again (Protech Professional Products) since these are both safe and effective for Valplast. Please avoid OTC cleaners as they are generally ineffective in cleaning Valplast materials and can also contain ingredients that could damage your appliance.
Val-Clean and Smile Again are two approved cleaners that are safe and effective for Valplast partial dentures and appliances.
3. Be Careful When Brushing!
Consider using a battery powered sonic denture cleaner instead of a brush to remove particles from your Valplast denture. If this is not possible, brush your dentures daily with a soft-bristled brush and water. Avoid hard bristled denture brushes and regular toothpaste, as these can be too abrasive and could scratch the surface of the denture material, making it prone to staining, buildup, bacterial growth and odors.
4. Soak Overnight
Most dentures need to stay moist to retain their shape and to avoid absorbing saliva. Use Val-Clean or Smile Again solution overnight or anytime you are not wearing them to keep them hydrated and disinfected. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
5. Clean Your Mouth Too
Even if you wear dentures, oral hygiene is essential. Gently clean your remaining teeth, gums, tongue, and roof of your mouth with a soft toothbrush to remove bacteria and promote healthy oral hygiene.
• Using Non-Approved Denture Cleaners: Most OTC brands of denture cleaner are not formulated to clean Valplast, which is a special nylon polymer. Not only are they ineffective but they could also potentially damage a Valplast device.
• Using Hot Water: It can warp your dentures - always use warm water instead.
• Skipping Regular Cleaning: Even if dentures look clean on the surface, invisible bacteria and plaque can accumulate. Clean your dentures at least once a day and soak them in cleanser overnight or whenever you are not wearing them.
• Ignoring Professional Check-Ups: Regular dental visits are crucial for maintaining a good fit and overall oral health.
If you notice persistent bad breath, gum irritation, or a loose fit, schedule an appointment with your dentist. These could indicate that your dentures need adjustment or that you’re not cleaning them adequately.
Clean dentures are vital for your oral health, comfort, and confidence. By adopting a consistent cleaning routine and avoiding common mistakes, you’ll ensure your dentures stay in top condition while keeping your smile bright and healthy.
